Marlborough Community Orchard was started by a group of determined volunteers with a vision of “a town in an orchard”. They wanted to do something about the decline in native orchards over the past 50 years and to make Marlborough a better place to live. In 2010 the first trees were planted as small whips and today there are nearly 100 mature trees throughout the town for everyone to enjoy.
Many of the trees are old heritage Wiltshire varieties with long histories and enchanting names.
Who could resist a Julia’s Late Golden, a Bedwyn Beauty or a Roundway Magnum Bonum?
Take a look at our blog on the orchard to learn more.
You will find the trees dotted around the town and in neighbouring villages too. The main site is The Diamond Jubilee Plantation on Frees Avenue, Marlborough Common.
You’ll also find the orchard trees in Wye House Gardens on Barn Street, the Priory Gardens, Roger’s Meadow, espaliered along the far wall of the Waitrose car park, in the green space alongside Morris Road / College Fields at Barton Park, Reed’s Ground opposite the Roebuck pub, St Mary’s Churchyard, St Peter’s Churchyard, Jubilee Field in Manton, and St John’s Churchyard, in Mildenhall.
We have tree-care and pruning sessions in Winter and Summer which are open to new volunteers and supervised by an expert horticulturalist.
We are actively enhancing the Diamond Jubilee Plantation for biodiversity by working in partnership with the Town Council grounds team to manage this space for the benefit of wild plants, animals and insects.
There is new signage coming soon, and four walking route maps are available for download from the link below.
include broadening the events calendar through the year to include a wassail, guided blossom walks, scything workshops, building on our connection with Marlborough LitFest, Apple Day celebrations, and more bulb plantings.
We welcome new volunteers to get involved in our tree care events.
Try out one of our orchard walking routes and visit the trees in any season.
Delicious juice from the Community Orchard harvest is available from the Cardinal Cafe at St. Peter’s in Marlborough High Street.
Please get in touch if you would like to sponsor a community orchard tree or to purchase an old Wiltshire variety for home planting.
