Transition Marlborough, like the whole Transition Movement, is rooted in the ethics, principes, and holistic design approach of Permaculture.
In very simple terms, Permacutlure is a great answer to the question “what would nature do”? It draws on deep observation of how living systems function, distilled into a set of principles and practices that can be applied to any form of human design. While it is often associated with gardening and food-growing systems, Permaculture design can be applied to absolutely anything.
Over the years, this group has offered a 10-session introductory course, run in roughy monthly sessions over a year. It covered topics such as ethics and principles, design tools, low energy living, composting, soil health, biological ‘pest’ management, social permaculture and much more.
We’ve also had a reading group focused on Stefan Geyer’s book Zen in the Art of Permaculture Design .
Friendly monthly meet-ups continue through the year where we share skills, ideas and learning in an informal and member-led way.
Several of our group have undergone internationally recognised Permaculture Design Certificate courses and some have further permaculture facilitation training too.
We are looking to bring back a form of our permaculture introduction course with friends in the Devizes area.
The modular nature of the course means each session can either stand-alone or, together with other sessions, can build into a broader course covering more topics and deeper learning.
The hosting will be distributed across different venues and draw on the expertise of a diverse group of facilitators.
The UK Permaculture Association are currently in the process of consulting and planning on a very large possible bid for National Lottery funding around food systems transformation. A member of our group is involved in that conversation.
If you are looking to meet up and share with like-minded local permaculturists, or keen to learn about this systems-thinking, nature-led approach to living, please get in touch.
There are 12 well recognised core principles of permaculture design that were brought together by David Holmgren. He distilled them through his years of work with his mentor and permaculture founder, Bill Mollison.
They are useful anchors for self-reflection and there is a link below to ‘pick a principle’ to start or deepen your own permaculture learning.
