You can find our Community Fridge in George Lane car park, (SN8 4BX or W3W sage.tagging.heckler). Opening times and updates are posted regularly on our Facebook page .
It is a joyful partnership project with Marlborough Town Council and first opened its doors in June 2021. We have a dedicated team of wonderful volunteers who pick up surplus food from various local food retailers and redistribute it, for free, through the fridge to anyone who can use it. No referrals needed, no questions asked, just a friendly welcome and an invitation to help us prevent good food from going to waste.
Since we opened, we’ve re-homed many tonnes of food through this project – mainly fresh fruit and veg but also bread and bakery, store cupboard and frozen foods too, along with cut flowers, fresh apple juice from Marlborough’s Community Orchard , and occasionally eggs and potted plants too.
The area immediately outside the fridge currently has a small community garden of four raised garden beds from which we invite people to forage for the herbs, veggies, fruit and flowers growing there. We’ll let you know what is ready and OK for picking and ask that you only take what you will genuinely use, and to leave some for others too.
We’re always open to welcoming new volunteers to join the team. Commitments are flexible and there are many ways to get involved.
We are a member of Hubbub’s national network of community fridges, which have taken off in recent years and now number over 700 across the UK.
In June 2025 we received a Hubbub grant of £3000 to put in a community noticeboard, develop the community garden project, extend the growing space, improve the water management and install some seating. The noticeboard is now in place and we have been lucky to find ourselves the site of a Town Council and ARK (Action for the River Kennet) partnership project for the installation of two rain-planters and capacity for 1000 litres of rainwater collection.
Our next project phase follows some recent tree stump removal, creation of two new ‘self-watering’ planting beds to extend the growing space, and a programme of public sessions at the garden to share some gardening and food growing skills.
We have also recently received a Wiltshire Council grant to freshen up decor of the fridge room, increase our freezer capacity and improve our ambient food storage.
We’ll also be working with St Mary’s primary school to create a more child-friendly feel to the fridge and the garden.
We’re currently looking for some help to re-fashion the fence in the garden to include some trellis panels. Offers of help from handy-people are very welcome.
When open, our fridge is always supervised by at least one volunteer, and we have at least six food pick-ups a week from local retailers to cover. We offer flexible volunteering opportunites for over-18s, that fit around your availiability.
